Four choreographers —
• Lucija Romanova (Croatia)
• Penelope Morout (Greece)
• Jaro Vinarsky (Slovakia / Czech Republic)
• George Alexandru Pleșca (Romania)
— represent different artistic languages and cultural contexts. Their approaches emerged at the intersection of traditions and personal histories and carry the power of immediacy.

The lab considers the body as a crossroads, where different stories, styles, and modes of expression meet in movement. Encountering each other in an international space literally allows the body to “expand,” becoming more perceptive, flexible, and open to new forms of energy. In this way, a kind of membrane is created between cultural layers, enabling participants to perceive the body as a living intersection of traditions and new meanings.

The program is designed as a comprehensive immersion: the combination of diverse teaching approaches gives participants the opportunity to experience the full spectrum of physical theatre practice. This genre brings together dance, dramatic action, work with bodily expressiveness, and stage imagery. It helps dancers to develop expressivity and the ability to create a story through movement.
as a tool for creating performance, where different methods become practical impulses for generating new energy and stage expressiveness.

LUCIJA ROMANOVA
Croatia
Adding to the Schach Matt Series, in 2022, she collaborated with British composer Alex Paton on the sonically powerful performance "Broken Hip and the Unbreakable Spirit". In 2023, her new creation "Zhivila" has undergone research and development and is waiting to be premiered.

Romanova has been a recurring teacher at the renowned dance festival Deltebre Dansa, b12, SI Portugal. She taught as a guest lecturer at Performact, Belgrade Institute for Artistic Dance, Ljubljana Dance Academy, Periskop Festival, Zagreb Dance Center, Ozora Festival, Le Facteur Paris and in London at the dance centers TripSpace, House of Mass, and Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance.
Lucija Romanova was born in Zagreb, Croatia. She graduated from the Academy for Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam. During her studies, she collaborated with choreographers such as Liat Waysbort, Julio Cesar Iglesias Ungo, Milan Tomasik, Roser Lopez Espinosa, and Keren Levi. After Amsterdam, she moved to London, where she worked with the Jasmin Vardimon Company, Tribe Company, Lîla Dance Company, The Waldorf Project, Kennedy Muntanga Dance Theatre, and others.

Her first solo within the Lucija Romanova/Schach Matt series, "Spontaneously Vulnerable Experience," was created in Croatia during 2020. In 2021, she collaborated with choreographers like Adrienne Hod, Reut Shemesh, Paul Blackman & Christine Gouzelis (Jukstapoz), and director Jan Lauwers (Needcompany).

PENELOPE MOROUT
Greece
Her first commissioned work in Canada, COME HELL OR HIGH WATER, premiered in Edmonton in May 2025 and will be presented at Fluit Festival in Calgary in October 2025.

As an educator, she shares her movement practice “Sculpting Body-Images” around the world (Kalakeli Movement Arts India, PERA GAU School of Performing Arts, REVES Festival Costa Rica, Kinissis Dance Festival Chile, Points to Play Mulhouse, Akropoditi Dance Festival Syros, Unplugged Dance Lefkada, MUDA Dance Center Ghent, Nunart Guinardó Barcelona, Škola suvremenog plesa Ane Maletić Zagreb). Her practice is based on combining physical exploration with playfulness and curiosity: it invites all participants to embrace their individuality and weave their unique artistic voice. Penelope implements in her teaching methodology elements inspired by “Fighting Monkey”, a practice by Linda Kapetanea and Jozef Frucek, with whom she has been training for 15 years.
Penelope Morout (GR-FR), founder of CROSS IMPACT Company, is an interdisciplinary dance artist, intrigued by creating hybrid projects through the fusion of various performing and visual art mediums. Graduated from the National School of Dance (Athens) and the National Technical University of Athens – School of Architecture, with a Master’s degree in Theatre Practices from ArtEZ University of the Arts (NL), her artistic identity lies on a durational creative process, during which academic and artistic research are intrinsically connected with her movement practice.

Penelope works professionally between Greece and abroad as a performer, choreographer and scenographer. She approaches choreography through a cinematographic gaze and brings performers and sets in constant dialogue. Through her company CROSS IMPACT, she has received financial support from the Greek Ministry of Culture and the J.F.Costopoulos Foundation, in order to create and tour her works (THE BOX: That Dead Space Between Us, EMOTIONAL DOGS).
